The Infancy of Jesus

From 'Annunciation' to 'Disputing with the doctors in the temple', the infancy of Jesus is perhaps the least well documented of all parts of his life.

Painting babies is actually quite difficult, and it is interesting that the early Icon and Renaissance painters depicted the Christ Child as a kind of small, wise adult. I am particularly keen on painters like Duccio and Cimabue where this is exactly the case. What you don't see in the reproductions is the vast scale of some of the works by the likes of Duccio and Cimabue. The above paintings are a far more modest size.
